How should an established freight brokerage expand?
Luis’s growth lesson starts with the customers you already have. If a customer uses you for one mode, you may be seeing only a small part of its transportation needs. Ask about the rest of the operation before deciding that growth requires a completely new customer list.
That does not mean saying yes to freight you cannot manage. It means identifying the opportunity, learning the requirements and building a dependable way to deliver the service. Specialized freight can require different partners, procedures, insurance and regulatory permissions.
Ask what else the customer moves
A truckload customer may also need LTL, flatbed, drayage or other services. Ask how those shipments are handled and where the current process is difficult. Listen before offering a solution.
Luis’s family business grew across several modes over the years. The lesson is to develop useful capability around real customer demand. Adding a mode to a website is easy; handling its exceptions and communicating clearly with the customer is the work.
Hire for the gap that holds you back
The next step is a self-inventory. Which tasks consume your time? Which are you good at, and which do you keep postponing? Someone who is strong at sales may need operational support. Someone who runs shipments well may need help developing accounts.
Define the responsibilities before hiring. The purpose of another person is to improve capacity and service in a known part of the business. Headcount by itself does not resolve an unclear process.
Build support before adding agents
Agents bring more than potential revenue. They also need onboarding, systems, credit decisions, compliance expectations and someone to help when a shipment goes wrong. If the owner is already the bottleneck for every decision, an agent network can make that problem larger.
Luis recommends developing your own ability to lead and delegate first. Start with one clearly identified growth constraint, fix it, and check whether the business can absorb the next step. The revenue figures in the original title describe the audience he was addressing, not a guaranteed result.
