What should a brokerage owner focus on in a down market?
Luis recorded this update in 2023 while the family brokerage needed more of his attention. It is a useful look at the choices an owner faces when customer work, payroll and carrier payments need attention at the same time. The recording describes that period, rather than today’s freight market.
His central point is practical: difficult conditions are a reason to get closer to the business. Look at which customers are still moving freight, where opportunities have changed and which commitments need to be protected.
Start with the customers who know you
Reconnect with existing and past customers. Ask whether their shipping patterns, purchasing process or service needs have changed. A quiet account does not automatically mean the relationship is gone.
Be specific about what you can help with. If a customer has a new lane or a different mode, learn the requirements before quoting. More activity only helps when the brokerage can execute the work it wins.
Keep pursuing opportunities without accepting every load
The update discusses outreach and bid opportunities as part of the response to a slower market. Treat those opportunities as work to evaluate, not proof that volume alone will improve the business.
Review payment terms, carrier costs, service requirements and the time needed to manage the account. A large award can create pressure if it demands cash or staffing the brokerage does not have. Keep looking for work while choosing it carefully.
Make an operating plan you can actually follow
Set a short list of priorities for the week: customer contact, active shipment service, collections and qualified sales activity. Assign an owner to each item, even if that owner is you.
The historical update also mentions offers and projects from that period. Use the lesson for its approach to running a brokerage under pressure. For current Freightskills resources and training, use the site’s resource and training pages.
